ASTROLOGY THEORY

The Ancients perceived the World as a living being, and Man as the World in miniature.  It was believed that the movements of both the World and Man corresponded, and given that the former could be ascertained, the destiny of the latter could be calculated.  Thus Astrology evolved  -  to interpret the events and nature of Man's life by the movements of the planets and stars.

Astrology has guided mankind from approximately the third millennium BC, and was recognised as a science until the 18th Century AD.

Astrology is defined as 'the art of divining the fate or destiny of person from the juxtaposition of the Sun, Moon and planets'.  Devised by the Babylonians around 500BC, the Zodiac is an intellectual concept.  It is envisioned as a band of sky extending 8 degrees either side of the ecliptic, the circle on the celestial sphere – an imaginary sphere surrounding the Earth on which astronomers locate celestial objects -  which represents the path of the Sun's annual journey through the fixed constellations as we see it from Earth.  The Zodiac comprises twelve equal sections, each representing one of the twelve equal sections, each representing one of the twelve Zodiac signs, and each named after the constellation which once was found in it.

The Zodiac circle, with each progressing month, symbolised the evolution of the archetypal individual'- perceived by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung and others, as an imaginary, perfect, typical being, having human form.

The Zodiacal year begins with Aries, progressing through Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.  The first six signs of the Zodiac, Aries through to Virgo, relate to the formation of the individual, from the primitive self-drive of Aries, to industrious Virgo, recognising and adapting to the 'social sphere'.  The final six signs begin with Libra, which desires harmonious relationships on a one-on-one basis.  The gradual integration of the self into society is revealed until, with Aquarius, the need to be an integral part of society is established.  Pisces, however, requires something more than mere socialisation.  To achieve fulfilment, Pisces seeks to attain a mystical 'oneness' and a sense of harmony with the Universe.

The ongoing cycle of life, represented by the Zodiacal wheel, has no beginning and no end – simply eternal continuity.

When the time comes for our return to live another earthly life (reincarnation), we are given the opportunity to select the Star Sign we feel is most necessary in order that we learn the lessons.  We are, of course, given choices and guidance to do this.  We are told the lessons most important to each of us, and then helped to make the best choice for our growth.  It is at this time that we are told of the Star Sign that will be of most benefit to our particular learning experiences, including the pitfalls, as we may see them once we have incarnated.

Within our Astrological System, we each have the elements of:

EARTH, AIR, FIRE and WATER.  You will note, those who have had their birth charts done, that some of you may have more of one element than another and that, indeed, there may be, in some cases, those who have none of a particular element.

Also, within each of the four elements, there are 3 vibrational modalities.  These are CARDINAL, FIXED, MUTABLE.  When one is born into one of these particular modalities, it very much tells of the type of person they will be.

CARDINAL signs co-relate with the principle of ACTION and symbolize initiating movements of energy in a definite direction.  Cardinal people have a direction in life, and once that direction is accepted, they will work towards fulfilling that area of their life.  These people are very committed to all they take on.

FIXED signs represent concentrated energy gathered inward toward a centre (ie. to do with 'me'), or radiating outward from a centre (ie. to do with them).  These people become very fixed or stubborn in their thinking and acting.  Once they decide on a particular pathway, they will usually not change because they think they are always right.  This is especially true of those on the negative pathway.

MUTABLE signs are co-related with flexibility and constant change, and can also be seen as spiralling patterns of energy.  They are often seen as swinging back and forth and being indecisive.  They very often try to fit in with everyone else, which is very much to their own detriment.  They can be their own worst enemy because of this tendency.

We need to remember as humans, that with all the Star Signs, we chose that sign because it was the one we can best learn from.  This is who we are at the moment, but it is also what we most definitely need to get past and overcome in this lifetime.  In theory, we choose the Star Sign that we need, to be able to work on the negative aspects, and overcome them in this lifetime.

For example, a Cardinal sign may become too focused on their life's path and miss out on the actual living on the earth plane part, like the down to earth, everyday living.

Fixed signs tend to become so set in their ways that they become extremely determined and stubborn, and demand that everything should be done their way, whether positive or negative.

Mutable signs are often so busy trying to please everyone else, that they do little of the work they initially came back to the earth plane to do.  They want to be nice to everyone, and feel guilty if they are not.  Because of this, they are continually hurt and their self-esteem just plummets deeper and deeper downwards until they are in real trouble of losing it altogether.

The ELEMENT most emphasised in your chart shows a specific type of consciousness and method of perception – how others see you – to which the individual is attuned.  This simply means that it is going to be more difficult to get past, as it is often mistakenly seen as, "this is what my star sign says, and it is how I am meant to be".  This is a big mistake! as we have come back to learn to undo the negative aspects of the sign and be positive.

You will find that each of the elements, whether Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable, will have recognizable aspects, regardless of the Star Sign.  Each sign of a specific element shows a different level of development and pattern of energy.

The AIR signs are to do with the mind, sensations, perception and expression, especially those related to personal interaction and to geometrical thought forms and abstract ideas.  Air sign people are often in a world of their own – out there and not grounded.  This is because it is nice out there and once can get away from the mundane.

The FIRE signs express the warming, radiating, energising life principles, which can manifest as enthusiasm, encouragement and the desire to express oneself.  These are usually the 'go-getters' of the chart, especially when on the positive pathway.  These people are usually very energetic and are continuously on the go.

The WATER sings symbolize the cooling, healing principles of sensitivity, feeling, response and empathy with others.  These people are sensitive to the feelings of others, often from great distances, and have a great empathy for the suffering of the multitudes.  They very often respond to these feelings by doing something of concrete form, and are the great healers of the world.

The EARTH signs reveal an attunement with the world of physical forms and a practical ability to utilize and improve the material world.  These are the people who will often put themselves in precarious situations – out on a limb, so to speak, in order to help another.  They need to go out there and find answers for themselves so they can get the information to help others.  They have a great concern for Mother Earth.

The AIR & FIRE signs are considered to be active and self-expressive, while the WATER & EARTH signs are considered passive, receptive and self-containing.

The WATER & EARTH signs are more self-contained that the FIRE & AIR signs, in that they live more within themselves and don't allow themselves to project their essential energy outwardly without a great deal of caution and forethought.  This enables them to build a solid foundation for action, often as much for others as themselves.

The FIRE & AIR signs are more expressive as they are always getting it our, pouring forth their energies and life substance unreservedly (at times ignoring the limits completely) – the FIRE sign by direct action and the AIR sign by social interaction and verbal expression.

The SUN

The Sun is the primary masculine principle or 'animus' within.  It describes both our archetypal image of 'fathers' as well as our deepest, most essential self.  By sign and aspect, the Sun shows what we need to develop in order to become fully integrated individuals, following our own unique purpose in life.  If we do not take up our 'solar challenge' and choose instead the safety of our lunar needs, or society's traditional values, our lives will remain empty and unsatisfying.  Instead of being beacons for the positive qualities of our Sun sign, we run the risk of becoming victims of it's shadow-side.  By house position, the Sun shows where this journey of self-discovery is most likely to play out in our lives.

The MOON

The Moon is the primary feminine principle, or 'anima' within, and represents our feelings and deepest emotional patterns, as well as what we need to feel comfortable and secure.  The Moon describes our experiences of 'mother', as well as how we 'mother' ourselves and others.  Because our bonding with mother as a child is our primary experience of relating, the Moon's placement by sign and aspect, will reveal how we approach and experience relationships as adults.  The house position of the Moon will show where we seek to satisfy our lunar needs for security and comfort.

ASCENDANT

The Ascendant corresponds to the moment of birth and how we first perceive the world, and hence the sign on the Ascendant sows how we go out and meet life.  It is the 'window' through which we see the world, and through which others see us.  While the Ascendant shows how we go out and meet life, we need to develop or 'grow into' the Sun sign.  The Ascendant is the path leading to the Sun.  The Sun is why we are here – the Ascendant is how we get there.

DESCENDANT

While the Ascendant may be how we and others see ourselves, and is sometimes call the point of 'self-awareness', the Descendant is what we usually do not recognise as 'self', and will meet or draw in, via others.  Deep within each one of us is an urge towards 'wholeness'.  What we do not own in ourselves, we will attract to us via others.  The sign of the Descendant will indicate what is necessary to balance the qualities of the rising sign.  If we do not attempt to integrate the energies described by the Descendant and Seventh House, we may draw in the negative face of these energies.

The Sun shows what we want.

The Moon shows what we need.

The Ascendant shows the style in which we go about getting what we want and need.

ASTROLOGY AND APOCALYPSE

A factor that enhances apocalyptic thinking is the science of Astrology, particularly its teachings about the cycle of world ages.  According to that view, our world will be passing from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius – during the closing decades of the century, and the first two hundred hears, and is marked by the passing of the spring equinox from one sign of the Zodiac to the next.

The Age of Aries began approximately 2250 BC

The Age of Pisces began approximately 150 BC

The Age of Pisces is characterized by love, possessions and differentiations, imperialistic aspirations, clear distinctions of the differences between the sexes and dualistic attitudes.

Astrologers variously calculate the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, as somewhere between 1950 and 2200.  On the basis of an intensive study of Aztec and Mayan stone calendars, it is projected that the transition of the Age of Aquarius is to occur during the night of the 16th to the 17th of August 1987.

The Age of Aquarius is characterized by human kindness, mobility, nimbleness of mind, independence, originality, Spiritual communication, androgyny (that is a blurring of sexual differences), compassion, the desire for peace, and a holistic ecological, feminist and Spiritual view of life.

Aries is the first sign in the Zodiacal Wheel, and marks the beginning of the Sun's journey through the twelve signs, and represents the individual ego emerging out of the ocean of the collective and into the light of life.  The raw, primitive energy of Aries indicates new ideas with courage and passion.  Self-willed and rebellious, this is the assertive sign of explorers, leaders of expeditions and pioneers of all types.

These people may attempt to assert their individuality, and in doing so they let go of the pull of their collective path – they let go of their memories of the past.  This often accounts for the insecurities which Aries hold close to their hearts, though they are very good at hiding this by being brash and over-confident.  Aries are usually quite unsure of themselves, but this is not what others may see.  They have a great veneer of bravado, which they present to the world.  Remember, Aries are searching for their 'self'.  If they choose not to keep growing in this life, they may find themselves being drawn back into the collective, and get lost there.

Mars, the planet of power and war, signifies initiative and energy, pioneering instincts, leadership and passion.  The traits of this planet are almost identical to those of Aries, and are therefore, intensified.  Primarily, Mars brings a strong desire for leadership, expressed with courage and assertiveness.  Self-willed Aries is rarely able to refrain from acting on impulse, but with underlying reasons which are generally sound.  Fiery Aries has little concern with the inadvisability of such actions  -  it is sufficient that self-expression has been achieved.  A close sign/ruler association gives emphasis to Aries' ego energy, and a 'me first' assertiveness typifies this sign.

Aries has a very powerful energy and is one that appears to be always charging forward in some way.  They also have a need for self-assertion.  Aries is meant to be the explorer or pioneer who is out there bravely setting off on a journey to open new lands, and open the way for others to follow.  When working on the 'negative' aspects in this area, they can become overbearing, insecure and clingy.

Being a Fire sign, these people exhibit a youthful exuberance.  They are full of energy and often make others feel tired just watching them.  They are warm and good natured with a natural charm about them.  They are easily aroused romantically, but this is usually short term.  These people need a partner who will keep the fire alight and stoked.  These people also need to have freedom in their work and home situations, so that they can express themselves and have room to move.

Being a Cardinal Fire sign, Aries represents action for action's sake.  You will find that as long as Aries has the freedom to move around, they are happy.  Aries is a sign that is easily bored, so needs to have constant activity and excitement.  When they start something new and the initial challenge is over, they will often move on to new areas.

Arians have good initiating ideas, but often have a great deal of difficulty following through with the ideas and finishing things.  They often need others to carry through with their ideas, as they can be more idealistic that materially oriented.   Others will often benefit from the ideas put forward by the fiery Aries person.

Aries loves the new and adventurous, and because of the constant need for change, fears getting stuck in old, dull routines or traditions.  Aries are physically and mentally quick, so therefore shows little patience for those who are slower.  This then brings forward the negative qualities of intolerance and ignorance.  Aries is self-oriented, rather than other-oriented, and must look to the Libran qualities (opposite sign) of co-operation and sharing, so that they are able to learn.

Being ruled by Mars we see that Aries can be bold and assertive, and has a very competitive spirit.  With this aspect they feel a need to prove themselves.  They can also be headstrong and impulsive, have boundless energy and may excel in the field of sport.  The ultimate aim of the Aries vibration is 'to sow the seed', so that the next group can make them grow.  Aries can be seen as the warrior, explorer, adventurer or pioneer.

POSITIVE TRAITS

Arians are direct in manner and speech and do not tolerate subterfuge and duplicity.  They can be stimulating, if sometimes tactless companions, being incisive and satirical in their conversation.  Enterprising and showing unlimited energy when dealing with their own affairs, Arians 'think on their feet' and react well under stress.  While displays of fiery anger are quick to flare, these fade just as swiftly.  Arians do not tend to harbour long-term resentment.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

The forcefulness and drive of Aries, if mis-used, can degenerate into selfish, aggressive and quarrelsome behaviour which displays a complete disregard for the feelings of others.  The egocentric Aries can be imprudent, boastful and show a restlessness often resulting in impulsive, foolhardy heroics.  Career-wise, promotion of self, and a tendency to progress at the expense of others, can be seen as ruthlessness. They have a strong sense of self will, and can be very argumentative and manipulative.  If they do not 'win' they are prone to whinge and complain incessantly.  This is part of their ploy to getting their own way. Arians travelling on a negative path use this technique to gain attention to themselves. They complain so much that others give in, just to stop the whinging. They are very 'me me me' orientated.  Positive channelling of the Martian energy-drive is essential to Arians.

SENSE OF SELF

The raw, unharnessed energy of Aries seeks fulfilment of self on its own assertively primitive terms.

CAREERS

Careers presenting a challenge appeal most to Arians – especially those where energy and initiative are required, such as racing driver, sportsman, member of the armed services or explorer.  As Aries rules the head, Arians often make good hair stylists, or on the mental plane, psychiatrists and psychologists.  Associations with fire and metal make the blacksmith and steelworker obvious choices.  Professions which involve cutting tools are also good choices.

HEALTH

Diseases that 'head first' Arians should guard against are conditions associated with the head – such as those affecting the brain the face and eyes, the upper jaw, the cerebrum and ceratoid arteries.  Typical Arian complaints are brain-fever due to stress or over-work, headaches, neuralgic and eye troubles, and toothache.  Aries are also prone to influenza.

The Mythology of Aries

Aries is known as the sign of new beginnings, and in Assyrian mythology Aries means ‘Prince’, indicating that by nature, and as the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries is a leader.  The Arian glyph, popularly thought to represent the horns of the Ram, was also said to be a primitive representation of human eyebrows and nose, and a ‘fount’ of energy, indicating the source of the Arian energy drive – both these having associations with the head over which Aries has rule.  The Ancient Egyptians equated Aries with the Ram-headed God Amun, or Amon-Ra, Sun-God, creator and leader of the Universe.

Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac and is said to settle the land that was discovered by Aries, and is supposed to cultivate it and make it productive as well as develop its resources.  As Aries goes out and initiates, Taurus must then take what has been initiated and make something of value from it.

For Taurus, activity is meaningless unless it has purpose.  Thus, by making the energy productive, Taurus can then transform energy into power.  Taurus is a feminine sign and is linked with the cycles of nature and Mother Earth.

On an inner level, Taurus is about cultivating one's own inner resources and discovering one's inner value and self-worth.

Being an Earth sign, Taurus is naturally attuned to the physical world of the senses, and to nature and its rhythms.  Taurus knows that 'for everything there is a season', which makes them very patient.  They are willing to wait until the timing is right.  Taurus is very drawn to a faith or philosophy that is practical.

Being a Fixed Earth sign, Taurus is naturally drawn towards stability and security.  Taurus needs to feel secure, usually by owning property or having money in the bank.  Taurus is the most determined and stubborn of all the signs, and if they are forced into change, they will dig their heels in and rebel against anyone who tries to push them against their will.  Taurus does not like change.  They are difficult to budge once having made up their mind about something.  Taurus can be lazy, particularly if asked to do something they don't want to do.  On the other hand, once their mind is made up, they can be very determined about things, and there is no stopping them once they've started.

Being ruled by Venus, Taureans are by nature, romantic, and can be very devoted and loyal.  They need to feel that their 'loved one' is as attached to them, as they are to their loved one.  They will demand proof of the affection.  Taurus can be extremely sensual and are physically-oriented.  Being ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Love, signifies beauty, sensuality and a love of art and music.  Not only is there a desire for erotic, physical love in the Taurean nature, but also a need for warmth and affection, and a yearning to bestow these qualities.  Venus brings to Taurus a love of the luxuries in life, and a desire to possess beautiful things.  Symbolizing harmony, unison and relatedness, Venus is said to govern that period of adolescence when a person begins to attract, and is attracted by, the opposite sex.  This is also a time when relationships are formed and possessions are gathered.

Taurus can be possessive, and there is a danger of trying to 'own' a loved one.  Venus also represents creativity, and Taureans are usually artistic and creative.  They have a love of music and appreciate beauty and superior quality.  They are usually very family oriented and make for good providers.

When used positively, Taurus has the power to provide the necessary roots of the raw energy put out by Aries, to grow into the permanent tree trunk of stability, that can grow out into the realm of life's experiences.

POSITIVE TRAITS

Taureans make loyal, steadfast companions and are caring and protective towards loved ones and possessions.  They are practical and competent in the management of business affairs and prefer a stable, organized routines, disliking new projects or ventures.  Taureans enjoy cultural pursuits, often being talented in the artistic field – and since Taurus rules the throat, many are blessed with good speaking and/or singing voices.  Lovers of luxury, Taureans make charming, hospitable hosts.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

The plodding ‘down to earth’ Taureans can become too ‘fixed’ and stubborn in attitude, placing too much significance on conservatism.  He or she may lack imagination and show obstinancy with a tendency to boorishness.  Inertia and indolence in the workplace, selfishness, avarice and meanness can become evident.  The Taurean’s love of luxury may succumb to over-indulgence, causing weight problems.  The Taurean’s inbuilt awareness of possessions can become overstressed, creating jealousy and suspicion.

HEALTH

Taurus has rule over the throat and thyroid glands and subjects could find that they have a tendency to suffer from throat infections such as laryngitis, tonsillitis and goiter.  Croup, quinsy and diphtheria are other potential sicknesses.  Obesity could also be a problem, and diet should be carefully monitored.  Luxury-loving Taureans are advised to consider walking, light exercise and perhaps some weight training as a daily regime, to improve muscle control and maintain health.

The Mythology of Taurus

Taurus, the Heavenly bull, whose earliest known name in Persian Astrology meant the ‘Bull of Light’, is also seen as demi-Taurus, with hindquarters which are lost in the clouds, and as the mer-bull (Taurus with a fish tail), an example of magical imagery, signifying the sign’s spirituality.  Links with the Sacred Bull of Mithraism and Apis, another celestial bull, Taurus represented the Egyptian sacred Bull within whose body the God Osiris was incarnate.  To the Egyptians, Taurus, who symbolized fertility and growth, indicated the time for ploughing the Earth.  There were associations too, with the Greek God Zeus who, taking the form of a bull, abducted the mortal girl Europa.

The third sign of the Zodiac, Gemini, is one half of the positive-negative pair of signs in which the mental and emotional aspects of the archetypal individual are developing.  Gemini is the ‘mental’ part of this duo.  Inquisitive, intelligent, restless and adaptable, air Sign Gemini excels in the communications field.

Mercury, the ruling planet of Gemini, is the consummate Air planet.  Symbolizing communications of all kinds, Mercury brings the ‘mentality’ aspects of versatility, activity, mental and verbal dexterity and general quickness of mind and movement.

Gemini is looking for wholeness within the self.  Gemini moves out into the open country-side to establish connection with trade and people from surrounding areas.  Gemini is a masculine, outgoing sign and having put down roots in Taurus, he is now ready to go out and extend himself through relating with others in the immediate environment.

These people must learn and grow.  The Gemini mind is always darting about and exploring the relationship between things, ideas and people, always attempting to broaden his understanding.  He is like a young person exploring life;  the one who embodies the principles of selection.

Being an Air sign, Gemini is naturally attuned to the intellect and the mental realm of thought.  Being the first of the Air signs, it is the role of Gemini to name and classify things.  These people have the ability to have mastership of words.  They can be very clever and gifted in the way they are able to use words, especially if on the positive pathway. Gemini can also be extremely hurtful in the way they use their words when on a negative pathway.  This applies to all signs, but more so to Gemini people, because of their natural gift with words.  They can be brilliant intellectually, but may stay at a level of intellect if something cannot be proven to them rationally.  They can be very determined and get trapped in their own mindset, instead of allowing the mind to grow and expand.

Being a Mutable Air Sign, Gemini's thoughts tend to spiral out of control at times.  Their natural impulse is to expand themselves into as many areas of life as possible, but they can very easily scatter their thoughts and energies.  These people often suffer from very bad headaches due to too much going on in their minds, at any one time.  Gemini often finds it difficult to make up their minds as they sway back and forth from one thing to the other.

Gemini can be very versatile and are hard workers.  They also need to communicate with others often.  Gemini needs variety and have the need to feel free and able to move around in their work situations.  If they feel trapped in any situation, they very quickly scatter their energies and suffer with nervous exhaustion. Unless Gemini learns to direct their energy into positive pursuits, they can be very restless and dissatisfied.  They can become the 'social butterfly' because of this restlessness.  Gemini always appear to be looking for something different to do and somewhere different to be, and do not like situations that they are tied in to.  They do not like to be in any situation or relationship where they are restricted, or have their wings clipped in any way.

Being ruled by Mercury gives Gemini people an insatiable thirst for learning and understanding.  Mercury is the planet of the rational mind.  Gemini usually has a very quick mind and can be gifted with language and speech.  Some of these people may become mimics and may have the ability to use different accents.  Gemini is also known to be a 'chatterbox'.

As Gemini rules the hands, these people often gesticulate with their hands whilst speaking. These people are usually very skilled with their hands, so can be skilled craftsmen, surgeons, car mechanics and the like. Gemini gathers information, which they are meant to pass on to others.  Gemini is seen as twin personalities in many cases, and often express themselves in at least two different ways.  Gemini people often find it difficult to sit still for too long because of their active minds.

Mercury is associated with youthfulness, so Gemini people often look (or attempt to look) youthful.  Gemini dreads growing old, or the thought of perhaps losing their mental facilities.  Gemini looks for eternal youth, often having the 'Peter Pan Syndrome'.  Gemini loves to have fun and kick up their heels. In marriage and committed relationships, Gemini needs to feel free, as to clip their wings will make them feel tied-down and uncomfortable.  Air signs tend to be less passionate than other signs, and as such, Air Sign Gemini is flirtatious and enjoys light-hearted affairs.  While the appropriate partner could inspire them to love quite deeply, Geminis tend to have more than one significant relationship in their lives.  Fellow Air signs Libra and Aquarius share Gemini’s intellect, and both would bring a keen sense of justice and a restraint to Gemini’s inconsistencies.  Libra would bring balance and a ‘hesitancy’; Aquarius, reasoning and a social awareness.  Partners should not be too concerned about Gemini’s roving eye.

Key Phrase:

‘on the wings of the wind and with the swiftness of sound, I encircle the Earth…’

POSITIVE TRAITS

Intelligent, inquisitive and quick-witted, Geminis are lively in both conversation and debate – understandably, the nimble, chattering monkey is one of the symbols of this sign.  Light-hearted and flirtatious, adaptable Gemini can also show considerable intellectual dexterity when dealing with facts, figures, reason and logic.  The ‘Twins’ express the duality of Gemini and subjects are skilled at the co-ordination of mind and hands, and are often ambidextrous.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Gemini can be mischievous, using their inventive mind for deceitful purposes – often telling one person on thing, and the next person, something different.  The high energy level and mental agility of Gemini can, when over-stressed, deteriorate into restlessness and instability.  Always attracted to new interests and ideas, Gemini may well flit from project to project, touch on each in a superficial way and then abandon it.  This lack of concentration and perseverance produces unreliability, inconsistency and capriciousness.  Dishonesty can also arise when an inherent ‘cleverness’ enables Geminis to live by their wits.

SENSE OF SELF

Mentally-orientated Gemini has a constantly questing, never-resting intellectual drive.

CAREERS

Enjoying a wide range of pursuits, lively Geminis can make excellent teachers, broadcasters and journalists.  Gemini excels at all types of communication and in particular those occupations which allow their initiative, imagination and free expression.  They are also accomplished linguists, translators, teachers, lecturers and salespeople – occupations that give Gemini’s agile mental and verbal skills full expression.  Careers connected with travel (ie. courier, news reporter, travel agent or aerobatic pilot are all typically ‘Mercurial’.

HEALTH

Gemini has rule over the hands, arms, lungs and nervous system and this restless sign suffers health difficulties with these parts of the body.  Respiratory and nervous disorders, however, are the main Gemini health problems.  Counter-balancing nervous excitability, periods of rest are advisable and a channeling of Gemini’s compulsive restlessness will avoid debilitating exhaustion.  Overcoming illnesses comparatively quickly, Geminis keep a youthful appearance throughout their lives.

The Mythology of Gemini

Gemini is symbolized by the Celestial Twins, who, in Greek Mythology, were Castor and Pollux, twin sons of Leda and Zeus.  Castor was seen as the mortal and Pollux as the immortal twin, and when Castor was slain, leaving behind a grief-stricken Pollux, Zeus, out of fatherly concern for his sons, made both immortal, and placed them in the Heavens.  Gemini, from the Latin meaning ‘twin’, has been variously interpreted through the ages.  One of these interpretations sees them as Man and Woman. Folklore sees in Gemini the duality of nature:  growth and decay, light and dark, summer and winter.

The fourth sign of the Zodiac is Cancer, the second and ‘emotional’ half of the Gemini/Cancer, positive/negative duo.  Fundamentally, Cancer requires emotional security and has a strong mother-connectedness, with the desire to nurture and nourish.  Cancerians are home-loving, intuitive, sensitive and relate happily to the ‘caring’ professions.

With an exceptionally close sign/ruler relationship, the fundamental expression of both the Moon and Cancer concerns emotional security and the maternal, nurturing instincts.  Influencing the ebb and flow of tides and the growth of plant life, the Moon has had irrevocable links with fertility and motherhood since the dawn of time.  The Moon exerts a powerful influence over her astrological sign, and this is reflected in Cancerians mood changes, emotionality, intuitiveness and receptiveness.  Governing subconscious reactions and feelings, Cancerians have strong emotional links with the past and a reluctance to break away from home and loved ones.

Being ruled by the Moon, Cancer corresponds to the Full Moon Phase, or the Mother.  The Moon is the 'mothering' or 'nurturing' principle and Cancer is the natural parent.  They are very protective of their children and always need to be aware of the tendency to over-protect them and smother them with love.  Cancer needs to be needed.  The Mother is very important in the life of the Cancerian child and there is sometimes a psychic connection with the mother all of their lives.  The home is very important to Cancer, as it is where the family is, and feelings run strong to do with family and close friends.

Cancer is tenacious and never lets go.  She is Ying and Yang;  the union of feminine and masculine – the mystic marriage.  Cancer is the first sign in the Western hemisphere of the Zodiac, describing relationship to others.  Cancer is a feminine sign and takes the outward energy of Gemini and focuses it inward, to create the emotional and feeling foundation for the home and family.  Cancer opens up to others on a feeling level and the primary need for Cancerians is the establishment of family.  Within this family unit there will be members who will depend on Cancer for security.

In the Southern Hemisphere, Cancer lies on the Winter solstice – the shortest day and the longest night. Cancer is open to an influx of Universal Energies from the Collective.  At their deepest level, Cancerians are highly psychic and intuitive.

Being a Water Sign, it is the 'feeling' and emotional aspects that are most important to Cancer.  It is the primary 'feeling sign' , whose basis for understanding their world is emotional.  Cancerians absorb feelings from the atmosphere and can end up carrying other's emotions.  They are very sensitive, not only to the feelings of others, but to their own feelings of being hurt.

Cancer can become hysterical with fears, and unless their mental function is developed, they could very easily be overcome by their emotions.  Cancer need to be very aware of how easy it is to become overwhelmed by their own, and other's, feelings. The caring, nurturing aspects of Cancerians make them perfect home-makers and ideal parents.  Sympathetic, sensitive (though sometimes ‘tetchy’) – romantic, warm and affectionate in their relationships, Cancer seeks partners who would make good parents.

Being the Cardinal Water Sign, Cancer can appear passive, as though nothing is happening;  but underneath, just like water, there is always strong undercurrents which are extremely active beneath the surface.  Their 'inner feeling' life is very strong and once they know what they want they will go after it with great tenacity (often sideways like a crab).  Their feelings are active and they often initiate things.  Cancer's feelings are very strong and powerful, and they have a deep inner knowing.

Cancer is very resourceful.  They are natural hoarders and are always prepared for an emergency.  They are often very creative and can be seen as moody, but often tend to go inward to find peace and quiet – like going through the phases of the Moon.  The Moon is linked to the past, so Cancerians usually have very good memories.  Their memories are amazingly retentive.  Cancer can tend to hang onto past pain, therefore making it difficult to move forward, often due to lack of trust.  Cancer needs to feel safe and be able to trust their partners.  Cancer is very caring and loyal.

Key Phrase:

‘I will make secure my home; nourish and nurture my loved ones and protect all, tenaciously’.

POSITIVE TRAITS

Affectionate and with a kindly good humour, Cancerians are devoted to home and family and remain loyal to their friends, clinging to failing relationships which would have been long abandoned by others.  At their best in an environment where their protective and nurturing instincts are allowed free expression, Cancerians are natural ‘collectors’ and show great tenacity and perseverance  -  setting and achieving goals with a quiet determination.  They are also thrifty and methodical in their business affairs.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

The mood changes of Moon-influenced cancer, subject to the fluctuating phases of their planet, can become exaggerated with hypersensitivity, sentimentalism and self-pity often prevailing.  Concern for loved ones may be expressed as fussiness and, if fearful of losing a loved one, Cancer can resort to childish behaviour, becoming possessive and tenaciously clingy.  Kindness may swiftly change to ‘crabbiness’ and a disinclination to discard anything of sentimental value, often leads to a reputation for untidiness and a mass of ‘clutter’.

sensitive, caring and understanding            clingy and smothering

psychic and impressionable                         fearful, over-anxious and moody

SENSE OF SELF

The Cancerian awareness is of a relationship with the past …. its childhood, family and especially ‘mother’.

CAREERS

Thrifty, careful and with a shrewd business acumen, many Cancerians succeed in the business sector.  The nautical and allied maritime professions often appeal – as does most work connected with liquids, such as chemist, publican, restaurateur, caterer and hotelier.  The last four occupations are also in the ‘caring professions’ category, to which Cancerians are well suited.  Avid ‘collectors’, Cancerians are excellent curators or antique dealers.

HEALTH

The breasts, stomach and alimentary canal – all connected with feelings and nourishment – are Cancerian ruled.  The female reproductive organs, uterus and ovaries are susceptible areas and these are affected by the Moon’s phases, as is fluid retention.  Diseases affecting the stomach, liver and digestive system can be problematic for Cancerians, and a linking for food and drink may result in gastric ulcers – plus the necessity for diet and exercise.

The Mythology of Cancer

Cancer is strongly connected with conception and birth.  Its glyph is said to represent the male and female seed, the phallic symbol of horizontal ‘nines’, or the claws of the Crab.  Cancer has the greatest of number of fixed stars within its arc and many geniuses have been born when their Sun or Ascendent is in Cancer, with fixed stars prominent.  In Roman mythology, Juno set Cancer against Hercules when he fought the Hydra of Lerna.  Cancer bit the foot of the hero who straightaway killed it.  Juno then placed Cancer in the Heavens, making it one of the twelve Zodiacal signs.

In Leo, the fifth sign of the Zodiac, the individual is complete in all but one aspect – a dependency upon the acknowledgement of others.  Sun Sign Leo is regal, charismatic and has a strong desire for self-expression, lives life dominating centre stage, playing lead roles with wholehearted enthusiasm and sincerity.

The Sun represents the Father or primary masculine principle.  It is the part of us that separates itself from its roots and discovers who we are as individuals in our own right.  The Sun is the Father or Spirit within, which is the source of life, and constitutes our spiritual essence.

The Sun, recognized as the source of all life, brings in the influence of a powerful regality or vitality.  Leo is a natural leader and acts with pride and dignity.  Sunny-natured and affectionate, Leo craves appreciation and desires to be a leading light in whose rays others bask and reflect.  The Sun brings Leo creativity, a love of drama, pomp and pageantry. The Sun is the centre of the solar system and all other planets revolve around it.  Leos like the centre of attention and for others to revolve around them, because they need to be admired and can be susceptible to flattery.  They do need to remember that others are individuals too, and allow them the space to be themselves.  Leos can be overpowering in their love and are romantic, passionate and adoring.  This can become a problem though, as Leos tend to put such hight expectations on those they love, and don't allow them the freedom to be themselves.  Leo needs constant reassurance from those they love, otherwise they feel neglected – and to neglect a Leo will quickly put out their light.  Though Leo naturally has a strong constitution, depression can be a companion which will lead to ill health.

Leo is a masculine Fire sign and depicts one who is ready to go out into the world and impress upon it their own unique individuality.  Leo is ready to express himself, and has an expectation of being the centre of attention.  Leo is the sign of the Creative Father or Spirit within.  Any planet coloured with Leo will be touched with pride, a sense of drama and a want for recognition.

Leo is the ruler by Divine right, and is a wise leader as he takes his inspiration from the Divine inner source.  When driven only by the 'ego', Leo becomes the 'dictator'.  The spiritually aware Leo will always know that his inspiration and strength comes from the Divinity within, and he will then be able to inspire others to contact their own Divinity.  Leo's quest is to always find the Divinity within – the Spiritual Source.

Being a Fixed Fire Sign, Leo represents concentrated energy gathered inward toward the centre, and once there, radiating out from the centre.  The way this goes depends on the spirituality of the person.  The Sun – the ruler of Leo, is the perfect image of this.  Leo, as a Fixed Fire Sign, is prepared to sit back and bask in the admiration of others.

Leo's glow with warmth, generosity and love, and radiate with inner strength and vitality.  When this aspect is shown, people are drawn to them like a magnet.  Leo responds to this from the heart, and encourages others to bring out the best in themselves. If Leo realises that his strength and power come from this Infinite Source, there will be no one who is more loving, generous and creative.  Leo needs to shine and be special.  He may go to incredible lengths to make a good impression.  Leos love an audience and if you encourage or praise, you will have won their confidence, love and support.

Leos can often turn their hands to anything to do with the creative side of their nature, which springs from that infinite source within.  They love to create and will do this just for the sheer joy of being able to do so.  They love having fun, entertaining and having parties, though excess will lead to burning themselves out.  For Leo, their leisure pursuits are important.

Leo is the sign of pro-creation, and therefore rules children.  Leos see their children as part of their creation, and are very proud parents.  They continually see their children as reflections of themselves, just as they see their artistic creations as reflections of themselves.

Making a warm, generous and affectionate partner, Leo enjoys and excels in the role of ‘patriarch’ and provider – although they do need constant approval and respect from their partner.

Key Phrase:

            “I am”

POSITIVE TRAITS

The positive Leo is bold, courageous, open-minded and has a strong sense of dignity. Born leaders with a generous breadth of vision and excellent organizational skills, the commanding Leo presence is eminently suited to positions of importance and authority.  Leo’s generosity, warmth and affection is genuine and their confident, extrovert, ‘larger than life’ manner makes them greatly admired.  Loyal to partners and friends, Leos are optimistic, stout-hearted people who often show great strength of character.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

If Leo’s warmth and nobility turns to self-egotism, they can become very full of themselves, bringing forth an arrogance, and they have a tendency to become conceited and demanding.  This will then drive others away from them.  Fuelled by ego, Leo can very badly burn and scorch others, and if they continue to focus only on themselves they can quickly burn themselves out.  The danger for Leo is to get caught up in the ego, thus expecting others to always be at their beck and call.  When this happens, instead of encouraging others to be the best they can be, they enslave other with their demands.

A personal sense of regality, if over-stressed, may incline an autocratic Leo towards profligacy and arrogance with a pompous over-bearing attitude.  An unwillingness to take ‘second place’ is an extension of their vanity and conceit and whether they are magnanimous ‘king of the castle’ or caring heads of their family, Leo expects the ‘Lion’s share’ of appreciation and adulation.  If this is not forthcoming, condescending Leos can be scathing and crushingly dismissive.  Lack of fulfilment or repeated assault on their pride and dignity, may cause depression.

warm and affectionate                                              lustful, hedonistic

artistic and expressive                                               extravagant, show-off

SENSE OF SELF

Self-expression achieved, Leo is complete in the magnificence of itself, and in the acknowledgement of this, from others.

CAREERS

With their leadership and organizational skills, as well as their creativity and vision, Leos are drawn to ‘executive’ positions, especially those in which they may oversee and assert their authority.  Such careers as military officers, government officials or school principle, suit Leo.  Given Leo’s love of drama, such occupations as actors, producers and impresarios suit their personality.  All areas of the theatre hold compulsive interest for Leos.  The financial professions and those dealing with gold (eg. goldsmith or jeweller) are also applicable.

HEALTH

The heart and spine are ruled by Leo, and although health and vitality are good, ‘putting his heart into what he does’, Leo drives himself relentlessly – explaining why those in positions of Leo power may suffer heart-related problems.  Bad circulation and spinal afflictions such as lumbago may prevail.  Care should be taken to protect and exercise the spine, and prevention of heart disease by maintaining a healthy diet is a sensible precaution.

The Mythology of Leo

The Sun sign Leo is associated with the Nemean Lion of Argolis which possessed an impenetrable hide and was strangled by Hercules in the fulfilment of the first of his Twelve Labours.  From early times, Leo’s sign has been symbolized as a Lion – the Babylonians called it the Great Light, and the Winged Lion of St. Mark was derived from the Leo of the Babylonian Zodiac.  In medieval imagery, Leo was often accompanied by two instruments of kingship, the sceptre and the sword – depicting the capacity for good and evil.  According to the astrologer El Haganah, ‘Leo loves the splendour of power…’

Virgo, the sixth sign of the Zodiac, completes the ‘physical’ stage in the evolution of the individual.  Virgo confronts the personal dimension and also that of society, adapting and coming to terms with these, while striving to achieve perfection through self-criticism and self-analysis.  Virgo’s concern is with order, efficiency and exactitude.

Mercury emphasizes the communicative capabilities – these being less abstract and much more down-to-Earth in Virgo.  The ‘Mercurial’ quickness to learn, balanced by the retentiveness of Earth, means that in Virgo, this learning may be usefully communicated to others – through teaching for example.  Mercury brings an air of coolness, detachment and ‘virginal’ untouchability to Virgo’s personality.  Virgos are generally industrious and have high standards.

The realm of Virgo is to open the individual consciousness to a purpose of larger than itself;  even larger than home and family.  Virgo often turns within and criticises, analyses and discriminates.  This is often more towards themselves than others.  Any planet in Virgo will be coloured by perfectionism, analysis and fine discrimination.

The Sphinx sits on the cusp of Leo and Virgo – the body of the Lion and the head of the Virgin symbolising the strength and purity of this sign.  As the final sign of the first part of the Zodiac, Virgo is the sign of self-purification and re-orientation from the purely personal to the Universal.  On an esoteric level, Virgo is seen as the sign of discipleship and of the apprentice.  It sees Spiritual discipline as a means of purification and transformation.

Being a Mutable Earth Sign, Virgo is connected with the maintenance and purification of the body – diet, health, nutrition, plus techniques of yoga and exercise.  Virgo rules the intestines which supply nourishment necessary for the maintenance of the body.  Virgo digests the 5 previous stages, thus eliminating any impurities in both body and mind, and adjusting and refining the personality.

Virgo is resourceful and practical, and always needs to be doing something.  They are happiest when they are being productive and useful, and they love to help.  Virgo is the sign of service.  They need to be careful in that they may find themselves doing everything for others and thereby robbing these people of their independence.  They may consciously control others by making themselves indispensable.  Virgo is always busy and needs to learn to relax and give service to themselves as well.

For the developed Virgo, selfless service is a kind of Spiritual practice and is not done for reward, acceptance or praise.  Every act, great or small, is an offering, and their daily routine of life becomes filled with Spiritual significance.  Virgos make wonderful healers and nurses, serving others in the area of health.

Being ruled by Mercury, Virgo uses the mind to analyse, criticise and discriminate.  Mercury is the planet of the 'rational mind'.  This combination of earth and air can produce masters of technique, such as watchmakers, dentists or yogis.  They can make brilliant researchers or scientists, using the mind as a finely tuned instrument.  Virgo is excellent at detail, but can get caught up in the maze of inconsequentials and lose sight of the whole picture.  Virgo can use their mind as a healing tool and find meditation as a technique for inner healing.

Virgos can be severely critical, both of themselves and others, and can be obsessed with self-analysis and self-improvement.  They never feel that they are good enough, and feel the need to be perfect.  Virgo must learn not to be judgmental of others – fault-finding can be a huge problem for them.

There are two types of Virgo – the intellectual ones concerned with challenges of the mind – and the more earthly ones who are concerned with the realm of the earth, health and the human body.  The Mercurius, alchemical agent of transmutation, is a fitting symbol for mutable Virgo – alchemy being known as Hermetic wisdom.  The Caduceus, a staff entwined by Serpents, and the symbol for healing, was carried by Hermes, Mercury.

Partners need to be accommodating to this critical, perfectionist sign which constantly demands the best.

Key Phrase:

“With attention to detail and with humility, I serve.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Virgos are sincere, dependable people who are neat and methodical, and as ultimate perfectionists, are extremely self-critical.  Taking great pride in their work, Virgo enjoys things which involve analysis and attention to detail.  Attracted to learning, receptive Virgos are one of the easiest signs to educate.  Artistically inclined and proficient at handicraft work, Virgos are excellent with the finer details. Virgos make neat, methodical homemakers, always ‘on the go’, improving their homes with useful, artistically pleasing items – often crafted by themselves.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Virgo’s constant quest for perfection and their obsession with detail, can produce a paranoid, cantankerous person.  Virgo’s innate intelligence can deteriorate into deviousness.

SENSE OF SELF

In striving to achieve perfection, so does Virgo gain fulfillment.

 CAREERS

Virgos enjoy productive, practical occupations requiring meticulous attention to detail – such as confidential secretary or personal assistant.  The callings of chemist, scientist, dietician, doctor, naturopath, accountant or clerk are all applicable professions for Virgo.  Particularly suitable would be the craftsperson, involved in the production of beautiful items which also have a functional value.  Appropriate too are the ‘communications’ professions such as journalist, writer and especially critic.

HEALTH

Virgo rules the hands, the nervous system and the intestines.  This indicates Virgo’s link with food and nutrition.  Problems with the digestive system are prevalent in these subjects.  Virgos should be aware that their concern with detail, plus a constant anxiety that everything should be ‘just right’, gives rise to nervous stress, which may lead to stomach ailments.  Health problems can result from too much worry and stress, and ulcers are common in Virgo. A pre-occupation with their own health could indicate hypochondria.

The Mythology of Virgo

When Astraea, Greek goddess of justice and last of the deities to leave Earth, ascended to heaven, she became Virgo.  Fertility Goddess and harvest maidens such as Demeter and Ishtar, have represented Virgo, and in Roman mythology, justitia, existing long before man ever sinned, returned to heavens as Virgo as Nidaba, the Goddess of grain – so named because their harvest began when the Moon was in this constellation.  Christianity recognised Virgo as the Virgin Mary, and Virgo, clothed in flowing robes, is generally portrayed carrying a wheat sheaf, palm leaves or a vase.

Libra, as the seventh Astrological sign, is the first sign in the second half of the Zodiac and is desirous of amiable communion on simple terms – as in the one-on-one relationship.  Symbolizing balanced, harmonious unity with a significant ‘other’, charming Libra is also the sign of justice, diplomacy and the arts. Libra represents ‘Balance’ and the ‘Scales of Justice’, and typifies equilibrium.

In the Ancient Egyptian Zodiac, the Libran glyph shows a sunset over the Earth, and represents the ‘Male’ Sun with the ‘Female’ Earth beneath, and the ‘space of air’ in between.

Subjects of Venus are of pleasing appearance and make charming companions. Being ruled by Venus, Libra is refined, has a love of beauty, loves love and relationships.  Librans like to surround themselves with beauty and are drawn to the arts.  They are refined, cultured and charming, and these people (or people with Libra rising in their chart) can be the most beautiful and attractive natives of the Zodiac, as the natural beauty and balance of Venus reflects in their facial features and bodies.

Special one-to-one and preferably lasting relationships are Libra’s fundamental concern, and Venus brings the desire for harmony within these relationships.  The Air element imparts the need for communication with that special ‘other’ so that, together, balanced and harmonious conditions are realized.  The significant Venusian’s sense of, and need for beauty, is a predominant Libran trait.  This does not necessarily imply an artistic ability; rather a liking of being surrounded by things of beauty.  Enjoying the luxuries of life, Librans are often languid, with a tendency to what others may term as ‘laziness’.  In fact, Librans are always busy, usually in the mind and intellectual realms.

In Libra, self-consecration to the Whole begins.  Being conscious of the need for partnership is the first stage of the process.  Libra finds himself through partnership.  Librans love socialising and having a good time, and like things to be nice and harmonious.  They will avoid unpleasantness or the grim side of life, often covering up problems that seem too heavy or depressing. A planet in Libra will be coloured by balance, impartiality and tact.

Like Aries, Libra's opposite sign, Libra lies on the Equinox – energies of self and of the collective are balanced.  Whereas Aries asserts his individuality against the subconscious fear of being pulled back into the ocean of the collective, Libra asserts his social identity against a subconscious fear of being too individualistic.  Libra will then tend to over-emphasise his dependence on others to motivate and give him direction.  He stands at the balance between the individual and the collective.  Libra is now ready to offer himself to the 'greater whole'.

Being a Cardinal Air sign, Libra is concerned with the principles of truth and justice based on balanced judgement, reflection and evaluation.  They are known for their cool logic, diplomacy and their ability to weigh things up and reach an impartial judgement, not coloured by emotions.  With the ability to see both sides of an issue, Libra can have difficulty making decisions.  Libra is known as the sign of 'peace'.

With communicativeness and a keen intellect, charming Libra is agreeably affectionate, with a strong desire to please – albeit continually ‘weighing the balance’ with regard to partners.  Should these be found lacking, Libra cools quickly and continues their search for that significant other.  Partners should encourage positivity to counteract Libran hesitancy and indecisiveness.

Libra is the sign of marriage or partnerships, but they also have a tendency to idealise a partnership or partner, which can cause problems within the relationship.  Librans are very good at organising people to work together in a co-operative venture.  They strive to unite or join together, and the idea of a broken union goes against their true nature.  If they wish to end a relationship, Librans may manipulate their partner into ending it, rather than initiate a break-up themselves.

Although Libra is the sign of balance and harmony, because they learn about themselves through reflection and reaction, they sometimes create disharmony, or manipulate a situation in order to react against it, and learn about themselves and life in the process.  Venus as ruler of Libra, operates on the principle of attraction.  We attract in others what we do not 'own' in ourselves, in order to learn about ourselves and become more whole.

Key Phrase:

“Together, we will enjoy perfect harmony.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Considerable, courteous Librans enjoy communicating and the companionship of their fellows.  They are consummate diplomats and avoid friction whenever possible, using fact rather than aggression when confronted.  Amiable peace-lovers, Libran’s will mediate and try to unite those who are quarrelling.  Concerned with balance, Librans are fair-minded with a highly developed sense of justice.  They are intelligent, clear-thinking, generally truthful and loyal.  Librans have a sympathetic attitude to those less fortunate, and are quick to lend a helping hand or encouraging word.  The Ancients believed the Libran to be particularly trustworthy and to be able to handle other people’s personal money with honesty – even if they have none of their own.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Harmony-seeking Libra can become self-pitying and disillusioned by the natural ‘dis-harmony’ of life.  They often have problems coming to terms with ‘unfairness’. Searching for that ‘special’ relationship, Librans can gain themselves a reputation for being flirtatious.  The Libran concern with ‘weighing the balance’ often leads to indecision, and an inherent dislike to say ‘NO’ can cause regret.  Procrastination, downright laziness and ultra-sensitivity are common faults with Libra – as is vanity, when a pre-occupation with appearances becomes over-stressed.

sociable, gregarious, charming                                dependent on others, superficial

SENSE OF SELF

For realization of self, Libra requires a balanced relationship with one special ‘other’.

CAREERS

Not generally ambitious, Librans feel at ease in professions involving one-on-one counselling, such as marriage guidance or career advisors.  Librans excel particularly in the judicial, diplomatic and financial fields.  Enjoying clean, equable surroundings, Librans are appropriately placed in the world of fashion and beauty.  Careers in the arts are also applicable to Venus-influenced Libran – from artist, collector and valuer to musician, dancer or juggler.  Librans often make brilliant writers, as they are able to sort fact from fiction and have the ability to express themselves passionately.

HEALTH

The kidneys, loins, lumbar regions and the urinary system are ruled by Libra, and problems and illness concerning these areas prevail.  Diseases such as nephritis, lumbago and urinary tract infections tend to afflict the Libran.  Given Libra’s well-balanced tenor of life, health is generally good.  Care should be taken to preserve this equilibrium, and to not allow the inherent Libran languor to jeopardize their regime.

Scorpio, the eighth sign of the Zodiac, is the first one to be aware of the ‘mysticism’ beyond physical reality.  Associated with deep, powerful passions and having a rare personal magnetism, Water sign Scorpio is intuitive, secretive and cautious.  Concerned with probing ‘hidden depths’, the investigative professions are often appropriate for Scorpios.

Being ruled by Pluto brings Scorpio the energies of deviousness, secretiveness, violence (symbolized by death/elimination) and the renewal or regenerative process.  The influence of Pluto gives Scorpio emotional energy, with the desire to bring to the surface that which is hidden, to eradicate and to emerge, renewed and enlightened by this transformation.

In Scorpio, the urge is to lose ‘self’ completely, and through merging, become greater than self – to die as 'I' and be reborn as 'we'.

Scorpio sees 'we' as more important than 'I'.  By the time we reach Scorpio we are ready to allow our energies to flow into and merge with others, thus creating the foundation for all of civilization.

A planet in Scorpio will be coloured by compulsive desires, depth, controlled passions and secrecy.  Pluto is the planet of death and regeneration.  The negative side of Scorpio is the individual who instead of aligning his energies with others towards a greater whole, draws the energies of others towards himself, feeding off them and making himself more powerful at other's expense and controlling them.  This is the lowest level of Scorpio and shows one who is caught up in his desires and is ruled by his passions.  The more evolved Scorpio will see life as a process of transformation, where he is constantly dying and being reborn again on another level, like the Phoenix.  The highest level of Scorpio is the Dove, who has transcended personal desire.  Scorpio is the natural-born healer and mystic, ready to help others along their journey of self-transformation.

Being a Fixed Water sign, Scorpios are intense, even obsessive, with the ability to focus willpower on whatever they desire – whether it be power over others or inner empowerment through self-transformation.  They have deep, intensely passionate emotions, and can be like the iceberg, with more beneath the surface than is visible on the top.  Scorpios are secretive and can keep a tight control on their emotions.  They have an intense need to share with a partner on an emotional level.

Being ruled by Pluto, Scorpio is constantly wrestling with their emotional depths, seeking to transform themselves.  They can be the healer or therapist who helps others to redirect energy blocked in the unconscious into more creative channels.  Pluto is also known as the god of death and re-birth.  With this, death refers not only to physical death, but to psychological deaths within life, where we die to ourselves as we were, and are reborn to another level.  In Scorpio both death and sex are vehicles of transformation or change.  Scorpio's obsession with death can be an unconscious yearning for the death of the old self and the birth of the new – a yearning for inner transformation which gives birth to wisdom.

Scorpio's urge for complete union with another can manifest as the yearning for a 'soul mate', or on a more mystical level, transcendence through merging with the inner beloved or 'God' -  where the boundaries of individual selfhood dissolve and cosmic consciousness is reached.

On the esoteric level, Scorpio is associated with the 'Serpent Wisdom'.  When Shakti or the Kundalini unites with Shiva in the Crown Chakra, death of the ego-bound personality occurs, and is replaced with unified or cosmic consciousness (the Dove).

Key Phrase:

“I experience all things with intensity, passion and purpose.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Scorpios are intensely passionate and devoted to that which is theirs – be it a partner, family, career or ‘cause’.  They are reliable, cautious, often restrained in manner and prove to be ‘safe’ confidantes who keep secrets and true feelings well hidden.  Highly analytical, resourceful, accepting and adapting easily to change, Scorpios often solve problems intuitively.  Imaginative and with a compelling personal magnetism, this sign possesses a strong sense of purpose and never does things by halves.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Scorpio’s natural caution, if over-stressed, can lead to jealousy and suspicion of those around and havoc may be caused by the sign’s misdirected passions, fertile imagination, an inherent ruthlessness and biting ‘sting in the tail’ remarks which can be both hurtful and damaging to the recipient.  A slighted Scorpion is uncompromising in its bitterness, with hatred and enmity often lasting a lifetime. To Scorpio, ‘Love’ is all-consuming.  Sexual love represents the challenge of transcending the physical to reach a rare emotion of mystical intensity.  A tendency to indulge their passions too generously, to use their ‘animal magnetism’ too cunningly, makes the Scorpion a volatile, often disruptive partner. On the negative side, Scorpio can be the rapist, seducer or 'vampire' who uses the energy of others for his own purpose.

SENSE OF SELF

To Scorpio, living is a series of ‘deaths and resurrections’.  Through the process of elimination and renewal, Scorpio seeks the fulfilment of regeneration.

CAREERS

Work involving analytical processes, as with the scientist, researcher and criminal investigator, allows Scorpio to express its practical aspects.  The secretive aspect of Scorpio is seen in the work of the psychoanalyst and a mediumistic gift for healing would be aptly expressed by a doctor or spiritual healer.  Careers connected with the sea are applicable to Water sign Scorpio, as also are those with the ‘cutting’ Mars influence, such as surgeon, butcher or hairdresser.

HEALTH

Representing the secret mysteries of the life-force itself, Scorpio has rule over the generative organs, and symbolizing the ‘elimination’ process prior to renewal, the anus.  Ailments tend to be located in the genitals, prostate gland, bladder and colon.  A link with Taurus brings vulnerability to the throat.  Ruptures and abscesses may also occur.  Female Scorpios can suffer uterine and womb problems.  Mental rest is advised to maintain positive health.

The Mythology of Scorpio

The ancients followed Virgo with Scorpio in their Zodiacs.  Both signs are analytical by nature – in the ‘material’ and ‘emotional’ senses respectively.  Later, Libra was placed between, the Scales being held in the claws of Scorpio.  Indicating Scorpio’s power to destroy or preserve the life-forces, its image can portray either the ‘degenerate’, earthbound Scorpio or the ‘regenerated’ Scorpio, seen as the heavenly-aspiring Eagle.  The Scorpio glyph, similar to that of Virgo, represents the Creation myth of Man and Woman – and their ‘Fall’, symbolized by the Serpent’s sting or tail.  The barbed end of the glyph could also indicate Scorpio’s ‘stinging’ tongue.

Ninth sign of the Zodiac, Sagittarius is the most advanced of the Fire signs, recognizing and expressing it’s will within society and developing wide ranging intellectual interests to a more profound degree.  Valuing personal freedom and self-expression, expansive, outgoing Sagittarians are optimistic, outspoken and enjoy travel and sporting activities.

Jupiter brings expansion, maturity, optimism and joviality to Sagittarius – giving also a spiritual or religious dimension.  Expansion of knowledge, a widening of experiences, and a bringing to fruition of the labour of earlier efforts are also significant ruler-imposed traits. A Planet in Sagittarius will be coloured by beliefs, generalizations and ideals.  There is a restless aspiration propelling one toward an ideal.  The peak of the collective urge has its roots in Scorpio, but is developed in Sagittarius.  It is a fiery, mental sign concerned with overall vision and synthesis and develops the laws, ethical codes of behaviour, philosophy and religion, which are the intellectual and moral foundation of society. Indicating maturity, Sagittarius symbolizes the ‘middle years’ of the archetypal individual.  Demanding freedom of both expression and movement, Sagittarian traits are often best expressed in an outdoor context.

Being ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarius is concerned with the broader, overall picture, and with universal ideas which will guide humanity.  Jupiter represents the principles of expansion, and this is on all levels.  Sagittarius is always seeking to expand their horizons, whether this be through travel or through study and learning, or expansion at the waistline through over-indulgence.

Fire sign Sagittarius is ardent, and often difficult to understand with mutable feelings that quickly change.  The Archer’s need for personal freedom may mean that relationships are cast aside because of this. Sagittarius is the seeker of truth, and his urge is to understand Universal and eternal laws and principles and apply these to the human experience.  He is, therefore, the philosopher, social scientist and theologian upon whose vision society is formed.

Sagittarius is the manager of power, and the direction in which he shoots is arrows symbolizes the manner in which he uses or abuses his power.  He is the preserver of the social order.  The Centaur is the symbol of 'wholeness' and reminds us that while it is fine to shoot for the stars, we must keep out feet on the ground.  The Spiritual level of Sagittarius is the aspirant, teacher or prophet whose thirst for knowledge and Spiritual enlightenment are an inspiration to others in their quest for a higher source.

Being a Mutable sign, Sagittarius is concerned with activity, movement and freedom.  They do not like to be confined, and are constantly on the look-out for adventure.  They are bold, outgoing and often outspoken and cannot keep secrets.  Their eyes are always focused on distant horizons.

While Gemini is Sagittarius's opposite sign and rules short journeys, Sagittarius rules long journeys and is concerned with exploring distant lands.  Sagittarius is linked with universities and higher learning.  Sagittarius seeks companionship and adventure, and sex is a part of this.  They are endlessly energetic and can prove to be excellent at sports. Sagittarians tends to be jovial, optimistic, and buoyant.  Because their minds are occupied with larger issues they tend to glide over minor annoyances.  In their boundless enthusiasm, they can ride rough-shod over others, whose more delicate feelings can be hurt by their bluntness and candour.

Key Phrase:

“I must have the physical and mental freedom to explore many things.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Born extroverts, Sagittarians live life to the full and, with abundant energy and a strong sense of fair play, take great delight in all sporting activities.  An outspoken, light-hearted attitude makes Sagittarians popular people, and an above average intellect leads to a variety of wide-ranging interests.  In an intellectual sense, exploratory Sagittarians are often drawn to the more profound and mentally demanding subjects, such as law, religion and philosophy.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Sagittarius can, if over-stressed, become boisterous and their ‘jokiness’ can degenerate into ‘horse play’.  A natural generosity could become over-extravagance and the extrovert Sagittarian may develop braggartly, boastful and arrogant ways.  An over-emphasis on ‘personal freedom’ could result in quarrelsome revolt against establishment and/or social order.  The Sagittarian intellect may tend to accumulate superficial trivialities.  Mental restlessness needs controlling. The negative side of the Sagittarian thinking process is the narrow-minded thinking person who seeks to impose his own version of the truth on others.

Teacher and judge                                                     Dictator and propagandist

Straightforward and bold                                         Loud-mouthed and coarse, lacking in empathy

SENSE OF SELF

Sagittarius, restless and wide-ranging, comes to terms with society in which it expresses it’s will with some ambivalence.

CAREER

Suitable careers should allow both the physical and mental aspects of Sagittarius to be given equal freedom for development.  Sporting and outdoor professions are applicable, such as in the competitive, exploratory and the hunting fields.  Given the symbolic Sagittarian link with the house, all work connected with these animals is ideal.  The intellectual professions also appeal, such as writer, lawyer, teacher, priest and philosopher.  Sagittarians are also appropriately employed as translators of foreign languages.

 HEALTH

Sagittarius has rule over the thighs, hips and liver.  Sciatica and hip joint problems are prevalent and rheumatism and rheumatic fever are common ailments.  Over-indulgence may cause dysfunction of the liver, and the Sagittarian preoccupation with sport and physical activity can often result in accidents.  Psychological upset, mental strain or nervous exhaustion following intense restlessness will need to be offset by periods of relaxation – perhaps of a meditative nature.

The Mythology of Sagittarius

This figure is most often represented as a Centaur or Satyr – half-man and half-beast  - with drawn bow, later simplified into a three-headed arrow which was said to represent ‘spiritual aspiration’, aiming heavenward to the spiritual realms.  The Sagittarian myth concerns Chiron, who, in Greek mythology, was known as the wise centaur, a healer, sage and teacher.  He was also an excellent hunter and sportsman who, at death, was transformed by Jupiter into a constellation of stars.  Sagittarius is also associated with a demonic archer named Sagittary  - half-man, half-beast – whose eyes sparkled like fire, and who struck down opponents in battle like lightening.  As Shakespeare wrote in ‘Troilus and Cressida’, “the dreadful Sagittary appals our numbers”.

Standing at the gate of the New Year is the Roman god Janus, protector of gateways and passageways, who kept the gate of Heaven.  Double-headed Janus, looking back at what has been, and forward to what will be, was also known as the Lord of Beginnings, and it is from his name that the word ‘January’ is derived.

Astrologically, Saturn, the ruling planet of Capricorn, symbolizes limitations, responsibilities, control and discipline.  Conversely, Saturn typifies wisdom, worth, stability and security and brings success through diligence and perseverance.  Saturn is also the ancient ruler of Aquarius – to which modern astrologers have since designated the planet Uranus. A planet in this sign will be coloured by self control, caution, reserve and ambition.

The Capricornian glymph is said to symbolize the duality of conscious versus subconscious forces.  This is represented by the Goat’s horn and vestigial fishtail and is described as the sign’s materialistic ‘conscious’ predominating over the ‘mysticism’ of the subconscious.

Capricorn symbolizes old age and the father-figure, relating to authority.  Practical, prudent, cautious and controlled, the aspiring Goat climbs slowly, yet resolutely, to the top of the mountain.  This is the sign of politicians and administrators, power and officialdom.  Combining a close sign-ruler relationship, both Capricorn and Saturn are concerned with material achievements and social ambitions.  Capricorn, however, with it’s renowned dry sense of humour, does not have quite the same stern repressiveness as it’s ruler, the baleful Saturn.

Giving Capricorn it’s associations with ‘Father Time’, Saturn imparts limitations, control and responsibilities.  Symbolizing the stern father-figure, representing authority and imposing fair-minded discipline, Saturn brings to the Capricornian character two aspects;  that of endurance, patience and perseverance, and that of wisdom, stability and success, through dedication and hard work.

The collectivizing urge which began in Cancer with the building of the family unit, culminates in Capricorn with the building of civilization.  Capricorn is the statesman, politician, leader and administrator.  Capricorn is a sign of power, which can be used or abused.  Capricorn can be the tyrannical leader or boss who abuses his power to gain control over others.  He can be the strong leader who uses power wisely for the benefit of others, or he can be the Spiritual leader who knows that he is a vehicle for a higher power to flow through, and to direct that flow for the benefit of mankind.  Capricorn, symbolically, is the return of the God force to humanity after their underworld adventure, which began in Cancer.

Capricorn is the awakening to a greater centre of consciousness - personal ego – the Self.  On the esoteric level, Capricorn symbolises the birth of the Master within, and is a sign of self-mastery.  Capricorn may choose an outer mastery over others, or an inner spiritually directed mastery.

Being a Cardinal Earth sign, Capricorn is like a mountain pushing up through the earth towards the sky, and is concerned with the power and status that wealth brings.  Capricorn likes to buy, sell, manipulate, trade and organise.  They are ambitious and are rarely satisfied with themselves – they like to climb to the top and succeed.  They are achievement oriented and will push themselves to excel.  They have a great ambition which will usually bring them to a position of authority and leadership.  A public image and reputation are important to Capricorns.  They are naturally reserved and prefer to relate to the world from behind their title.  The goat can be a symbol of sexual license.

Being ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is concerned with working their way up and reserving the status quo and their position in it.  They are conservative and respect tradition.  With Saturn it represents the principle of restriction and limitation and the growth and wisdom that occurs through pushing past limitations.

Although Capricorns have a sharp wit and can be quite funny at times, there is generally a serious air about them;  sometimes even an oppressive heaviness.  They tend to be pessimistic and forever worried that things will go wrong.  Capricorns like to have everything organised and will leave nothing to chance.  They can be overly cautious and fearful.

Saturn is the wise old man  -  the wisdom of old age and Capricorns can be born old.  The first half of their life can be set with limitations and responsibilities, but they tend to reap the rewards for their self-effort in the second half of their lives.  Through learning to cope with adversity and because they push themselves so hard, Capricorns develop self-discipline.

With the dawning of wisdom, their burden of seriousness will drop away, and Capricorn will appear to grow younger and 'lighter' with age.

Key Phrase:

            “I did it!”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Capricorn devises the means to implement, in a practical way.  A diligent, hardworking sign which enjoys responsibility, it achieves it’s ambitions by perseverance, persistence and by applying a constructive, detailed approach in all things.  They are also tactful, kindly, authoritive individuals with a laconic, off-beat sense of humour.  Capricornians are traditionalists, and are ambitious, thrifty and self-disciplined.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Pessimism and nagging worries about irrelevant details are typical Capricornian traits and their cautious thrift can often degenerate into selfish, mean – even miserly – behaviour.  Their liking for order often gives a ‘holier than thou’ attitude with regard to their own exacting self-discipline and narrow-mindedness.  An over-emphasis on authoritarianism can cause too stern an attitude towards younger people.  If ambitions are thwarted, the Goat will become restless and embittered.

SENSE OF SELF

Capricornians have an immense sense of ‘Self’ which compels them to keep striving until they achieve their goals.

CAREERS

Caving, mining and all underground work are traditionally associated with Capricorn.  However, given their orderliness and organizational skills, any business requiring this ability is appropriate.  Capricorn will carry out orders from above and ensure that those below do their duty.  This would also apply to those Capricornians who enter the church, armed forces or teaching fields.  Building and construction work is also suitable.

HEALTH

Limiting diseases of rheumatoid/arthritic origin are common Capricornian complaints as both Saturn and Capricorn rule the skeletal system – especially the knees.  The skin may also be potentially troublesome.  Eczema and psoriasis prevail, both known to be stress related and the last, a rheumatoid-related condition.  Diseases associated with cold and old-age (such as osteoporosis) are common, as are digestive problems, due to stress.

The Mythology of Capricorn

Capricorn is seen in many guises – as the fish-tailed Babylonian go Ea, who rose from the deep to teach wisdom to Man; and as the Greek god Pan, who, fearful of Typhon, changed himself into a goat and jumped into the Nile.  Emerging as half-goat, half-fish, Zeus placed him in the heavens as Capricorn.  Seen also as a winged goat or dragon, drawing the chariot of Saturn, it was said that Time ended with Capricorn – also known as the Gate of Birth.  Occultist Madame Blavatsky claimed Capricorn as “the most sacred and mysterious” of all the signs.

Theory

Aquarius is the eleventh and penultimate sign of the Zodiac, and, like the Air which is its element, subjects are freedom-loving, independent and communicative.  Humanitarian, idealistic and possessing a keen intellect with a strong sense of justice, Aquarians enjoys social interaction and the kinship of their fellows.

As a Fixed sign, Aquarius represents a release of power to either expand what was built in Capricorn, or to overthrow or transcend the existing order to make way for the new.  Nothing in the Universe remains static.  When something reaches a completion, it must begin to change.

The task of Aquarius is to reform and improve society through his vision and to share with humanity the gifts of his inventive mind.  Aquarius can be the political visionary (like Abraham Lincoln) whose ideas are ahead of their time.  Aquarius can be the inventor and social reformer able to instigate change where it is needed, or he can be the rebel without a cause.

The evolved Aquarian will not only be open to new ideas vibrating in the etheric plane, but will share this knowledge with others to uplift humanity.  The urn of the Water Bearer is pointing down to earth, symbolising that knowledge of the celestial realms must be shared with humanity.  Aquarius can be the harbinger of the light, bringing vision to help dispel the darkness of ignorance.

Being a Fixed sign, Aquarius is also linked with the mental function.  Aquarius represents the 'Higher Mind', and the intuitive knowledge that all humankind is One – the 'brotherhood' of mankind – group consciousness.  As the final Air Sign, Aquarius is attuned to the Universal Mind.  They are inventors, disseminators of knowledge, future-thinkers and visionaries.  They are often ahead of their time and can be slightly out of sync with the world around them.  Aquarius rules all communication through air waves and electrical impulses – radio, television, telephone, telegraph, even telepathy.  Computers are also ruled by Aquarius.  These people are often seen to live in their heads.  They can be aware of the physical body, or can be cut off from their feelings.  Aquarians can be very rigid in their opinions and the world of ideas often seems more real than this solid world of form and matter.

Being ruled by Uranus and co-ruled by Saturn gives Aquarians a tendency towards perfectionism.  They may fail to act because nothing short of ideal is good enough.  Uranus represents the principle of change and the gaining of freedom through the shattering of the old.  When the life-force gets trapped in an old, outworn concept, Uranus comes along and changes it, thus freeing the life-force to continue in new form.

Cold, barren Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, is the planet of change, unpredictability and the intellect.  Aquarius, with its inherent dualism, reflects the aspects of both Uranus and its former ancient ruler, Saturn, which imposes limitations, an awareness of responsibilities and represents the ‘father figure’. Unstable, changeable, radical and freedom-loving Uranus grants Aquarians an individualistic, progressive outlook which may be seen as a sense of ‘vision’. Leaders and reformers are often born under this sign.

Aquarians like to shock, and are attracted to doing things not sanctioned by the majority.  Aquarians need their freedom.  Not all Aquarians are rebels, some are quite cautious. They may have difficulty with intimate relationships where they are expected to share their feelings, but they have a wide circle of acquaintances.  The group is very important to Aquarians, whether it be friends, like-minded people, or the larger group of humanity to whom they dedicate their services.

Aquarians of often urged to uplift and enlighten fellow human beings, and are in the forefront of society with ideas for social reform.  Saturn was the ruler of Aquarius until Uranus was discovered.  Saturn is the teacher.  They may be the progressive thinker who introduces new ideas into a traditional structure or the revolutionary who becomes tyrannical in order to preserve his position of power.

Key Phrase:

“I am the embodiment of all that society needs or desires.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Independent, freedom-loving, humanitarian and with a clarity of vision, which is often light years ahead of their time, gregarious Aquarians are happiest in social groups where their charming, individualistic approach often means that they are ‘leading lights’ in their particular social spheres.  Inventive, and with finely balanced powers of reasoning, clear-sighted Aquarians may use their progressive thinking to change and reform conditions for their fellows.  Aquarians are loyal to partners and friends.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

In pursuit of their own dreams, Aquarians can become blind to all else, being fanatical and even dangerously single-minded in this respect.  Their natural inventiveness and originality may be construed as eccentricity and their truthful outspokenness may decline into boorish tactlessness.  The influence of Uranus may cause the crusading Aquarian to be erratic, stubborn, rebellious and inconsistent.  The influence of Saturn can create over-conscientiousness, isolation and depression when goals are not achieved.

SENSE OF SELF

Aquarians take their awareness of ‘self’ from society, identifying the interests of the group as their own.

CAREERS

Careers requiring inventiveness and originality of thought are particularly apt for the Aquarian, and those with a ‘communications’ aspect often appeal.  In the radio, television and computer fields, Air sign Aquarius can make good technicians.  At best, when working conditions are not restricted, the Aquarian makes an excellent aviator, astronomer, astrologer, scientist, writer or actor.  Careers concerned with helping others also suit the Aquarian personality.

HEALTH

The Aquarian is susceptible to illnesses connected with the circulatory system – such as varicose veins, hardening of the arteries, and nerve and blood disorders.  Ankles and shins are particularly vulnerable parts of the body, and care should be taken with regards to breaks, fractures and sprains in these areas.  Toothache and pyorrheal are other possible ailments. Aquarians need to maintain an exercise regime to keep their bodies ‘light’.

The Mythology of Aquarius

Reflecting the signs’ duality, the symbol of Aquarius is the Water carrier or the God with Two Streams.  The Egyptian Zodiac image symbolizes Hapi, the Nile God – offering life giving flows of water to mankind.  Held by some to be Divine wisdom being poured out for the good of humanity, medieval astrologers told of the double flow accompanied by twelve stars as being the ‘mystical dew of alchemists’.  In Greek mythology, Aquarius was depicted as Ganymede, a beautiful youth who, at the command of Zeus, was carried to heaven by a great eagle, to become cup-bearer to the Olympian Gods.

The Mythology of Pisces

Roman mythology recalls how Venus and Cupid were chased by Typhon, leapt into the Euphrates and were saved by two fishes.  Granted a place in the heavens by the grateful Goddess, these were known thereafter as ‘The Fishes’.  The Piscean mysteries have long had intimate links with the church, and the dawn of the Age of Pisces saw the birth of Christ, and the development of Christianity.  The Fish became the secret symbol of Christ -  a symbolism embodies in the ritual of baptism by water.  With astrological significance, Jesus chose disciples whom He called ‘the Fishers of Men’.

Theory

Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the Zodiac.  With implications of hidden depths, Water sign Pisceans are mystical, imaginative, peace-loving people with a need for privacy and possessing a strong spiritual sensitivity.  Deeply intuitive and often influenced by spiritualism and the occult, Pisceans are natural psychics and mediums.

The great Sea God Neptune is the ruling planet of Pisces, whose duality is symbolized by two fishes swimming in opposite directions, yet bound together by a ‘silver cord’.  Neptune brings a nebulous aspect to their sign, creating a mystical personality which, in reaching for the intangible, is often drawn to religion – not necessarily orthodox – to discover its inner self.

Being ruled by the planet Neptune, Pisceans are naturally attuned to the oceanic realms of the imagination and the collective unconscious.  They are very creative and can be the vehicle to express what lies in the collective.  They may wander directionless and confused until they trust their inner vision.  Neptune is the higher octave of Venus, and represents 'Divine Love'.  Pisces is known as the sign of Universal Love, Wisdom and Compassion.  Neptune represents the principle of freedom through dissolving all boundaries and becoming 'one' on a feeling level with all creation.  Pisceans are often drawn to the spiritual, or metaphysical life.

Ancient ruler Jupiter also has a religious dimension, granting Pisces the expansion of consciousness, aspirations and spiritual development characteristics of the sign.  Bountiful Jupiter brings maturity and growth to Pisces, while Neptune, symbolizing hidden depths, cultivates detachment and a strong desire for privacy.

By the time we have reached Pisces, symbolically this suggests that the entire journey of human experience is collected.  Pisces is the final Water sign and symbolizes the ocean of the collective or collective consciousness.  Pisces is attuned on the 'feeling' level to the rest of humanity and is able to empathize with, and heal through compassion.

Pisces represents the flood or the deluge in which everything is dissolved.  Pisces must learn to give up reliance on anything outer, and turn within to the changeless and eternal self.

The challenge of Pisces is to have 'faith'.

Being a Mutable sign, Pisces needs to bond on a 'feeling' level between the self and the whole of humanity and creation -  The Universal Feeling.  Pisces is the sign of compassion, and this compassion means 'to suffer with'.  Pisceans feel the suffering of others so much that they are often drawn into a life of service or helping in some way.  They can find self through losing self in service.  On some level, Pisceans need to dedicate their lives to something greater than the individual self.

Water absorbs as well as cleanses and Pisceans have the tendency to absorb the feelings of those around them.  They can be born healers, psychics or clairvoyants, but can also be psychic sponges, absorbing the negativity aswell.  Solitude is needed to cleanse themselves from what they have taken on.  Pisces is a feminine sign motivated by feeling and instinct.  They may sometimes experience tidal waves of emotion sweep through them.

Pisceans are capable of deep understanding and spiritual bonding, and in a relationship, can be self-sacrificing.  They can sometimes become the martyr, losing ones-self in others' needs and may control or manipulate others by becoming either the rescuer or the victim.

Lack of boundaries may make them appear other-worldly, vulnerable or ungrounded – the drifter.  The challenge of Pisces is to keep in touch with the spiritual life, while continuing to function on the earth plane.

Key Phrase:

“I am in harmony, in unison with the mysteries of the Universe.”

POSITIVE TRAITS

Pisceans are caring, sensitive people, making intuitive and sympathetic listeners.  They are full of understanding and forgiveness, and have an empathy with, and are kind to, animals.  Capable of acts of great self-sacrifice, receptive to the emotions of others, happy, peace-loving and convivial by nature.  Pisceans are charming companions.  Intelligent and in a creative sense, inspired, having perceptive powers of interpretation, Pisceans can be pure idealists who enjoy supporting good causes.

Pisces can be the visionary or mystic, attuned to the spiritual realms, the healer able to empathize with and help others, or the artist who is the vehicle for the collective imagination.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

Difficulty in making decisions and concentrating on practical matters can cause the Piscean to drift ineffectively.  Due to hypersensitivity, they may also suffer from mood swings, guilt complexes and an inability to express themselves clearly.  Procrastination in inherent to the Piscean nature, and self-discipline in this respect may be necessary.  Dwelling in a Neptunian dream world often means that Pisceans resort to alcohol and drugs to fulfil their need for emotional and mental stimulation.

Pisces can be the 'victim' or escapist, lost and with no direction, in the vast ocean of the collective, escaping into alcohol, drugs or addictions, or drowning in the senses.
